“Beware: Critical Language Theory”
One of the key tenets of Marxist theory is to “ruthlessly criticize everything.” First it was Confederate statues, then Robert E. Lee and now it is English Language. So thoroughly has critical theory been implemented into every nook and cranny of the University of Virginia, especially the humanities departments, that strange graphs documenting the fact now populate their website, depicting the deconstruction of language used to shape young minds. The minds of these students will one day lead the nation, and the cultural Marxists know that.
Our English Language which formerly reflected the influence of generations of Christian thinkers, and is based on sacrificial love, merit and honor. But, in recent years, our language has been put under a microscope, scrutinized, criticized and scrubbed carefully. Words have been carefully identified and counted using a new, Marxist technique called “key-ness”. This new system counts the number of times a certain word is used inside a particular department. “Wait, what”? Why?
Who does this?
What responsible teacher or institution COUNTS the numbers of times a word such as “minority”, “system””, “police” or “community” is used in a given class?
Who has time during important foundational course, meant for acquiring wisdom of “the best that has been thought and said.,” to color-code the number of times a word is used in a particular department seems especially bizarre. Why would it be important to correlate the findings in shades of black, brown or tan? Is anyone watching out for our tax dollars? Does the Board of Visitors know about this? Do Department Heads find this a good use of funds? Is this a strategic objective, and if so, who is behind it? Deconstruction philosophers, Michel Foucault or Jacques Derrida?
When I saw this graph and others on UVA’s “Voices for Equity” website, chills went down my spine, like I was looking at Dachau or Belsen- Belsen, Nazi concentration camps where humans are reduced to numbers and strict, controlling authoritarians remove the humanity from the environment. Here, before my eyes, is a forced sterilization of language, bent on thought control, and on transforming the Judeo-Christian liberal arts tradition into something else: a ghastly, critical, hate-filled depressing mental mess. Different to be sure, devoid of beauty, context and spirit.
Clearly a great deal of time and money has been spent on this exercise of deconstructing language. Eerie blocks of “redacted” language are highlighted…the meaning of what is being said is no longer the important thing, but the words used to convey it – a surface treatment – is what is important. All to de-construct, to break apart, break down and replace with something else. This is language destruction 101 in order to destroy the “4 Olds: old culture, old customs, old habits and old ideas” which Mao destroyed in his 1958-1970’s Chinese Cultural Revolution. Beware: English Language Critical Theory, like CRT, is meant to maim.
